About

Big issues tackled in beautiful ways. A small publication touching upon issues existing in the South Asian community.

Through Brown Eyes is a celebration of South Asian voices, experiences, and stories. Created by South Asian individuals, we offer a platform where creative work can be shared and celebrated within the community.

For the South Asian community, we hope reading this makes you feel closer to your roots and connected through the shared experiences and mindsets we often hold. For everyone else, we hope it feels like having a conversation with a brown friend or partner, a chance to view the world through brown eyes, and explore heavy topics in thoughtful and beautiful ways.

Thank you for supporting Through Brown Eyes.

A Note From the Editor

I first put out an open call for this issue in October 2023, hoping to publish within a few months. But soon after, the genocide in Gaza dominated global headlines, and like many, I found it impossible to look away. It felt wrong to work on a creative passion project while watching such unimaginable loss. Between global grief and personal struggles, I had to pause. When I finally returned to this project, I knew I couldn’t ignore what had happened or why I had to step away. A portion of the proceeds from this issue will go toward humanitarian aid in Palestine. It’s a small gesture, but a necessary one.

Even amidst rubble and grief, Palestinians continued to celebrate love. Proposals happened under airstrikes. Nikkahs were held in shelters. Couples posed for wedding photos among ruins. This issue is dedicated to those in Palestine who have lost their right to celebrate freely. For those whose weddings were interrupted, postponed, or taken from them entirely. To those whose joy is an act of defiance. I hope this issue serves as a reminder that joy and resistance are deeply intertwined.
